Setting up a driving range, whether commercial or private, requires the right netting to keep golf balls contained, protect neighbouring properties and create a safe training environment. Here's what you need to know about golf driving range netting.

Why Proper Netting Matters

Golf balls travel at serious speeds. A well struck drive can exceed 160 kph off the clubface. Quality netting contains balls within your designated area, protects adjacent properties and roads, reduces liability and insurance concerns, creates a professional appearance that attracts customers and minimises ball loss and replacement costs.

Mesh Size and Material

Most driving ranges use 2-3.5mm square mesh netting, which effectively stops golf balls while maintaining visibility. The material should be UV stabilised polyethylene or nylon. Knotted or knotless construction both work but knotless typically lasts longer. The netting must be rated for outdoor exposure in Australian conditions, often with a minimum 3mm thickness for durability.

Height Requirements

End netting at driving ranges typically ranges from 12 metres to 24 metres high. The height depends on distance from the tee, because longer ranges need taller nets. Local regulations and planning permits matter. Proximity to neighbouring properties affects requirements. You also need to consider whether you're containing full drives or just mishits.

Side netting is usually lower, around 6 metres to 10 metres, as balls don't travel as high laterally.

Installation Considerations

Commercial driving ranges almost always require professional installation. Engineering requirements and permits demand expertise. The height and scale of the project create complexity. Safety compliance and liability matter significantly.

Layout Planning

Consider your range design carefully. Full containment means netting on three sides plus the end. This offers highest cost but complete protection. End only netting means just back netting if sides are clear. This is more economical for rural locations. Target zones need additional netting around greens or hazards. Overhead netting is sometimes required near roads or properties.

Maintenance and Longevity

Quality driving range netting typically lasts 10 to 15 years with proper maintenance. Annual inspections check for wear, tears or UV degradation. Tension adjustments prevent sagging. Immediate repair of any damage is essential. Clean debris and vegetation from the net regularly.

Cost Considerations

Driving range netting is more expensive than smaller installations because of larger surface area and material quantity. Engineering and structural requirements add cost. Professional installation labour is significant. Potential permit and certification costs also apply.

That said, it's a one time investment that protects your business for years. The cost of a single lawsuit from a wayward ball far exceeds proper netting.
